What’s Happening?

Standard

I’ve had several interesting things happen to me lately.  The first was traveling with my family to Santa Cruz, California.  I found, when I was there, that I was looking at people in various places who had greying hair and wondering if I went to school with them.

I might only be able to recognize someone if I have seen them on Facebook.  It has been a very long time since I lived in Santa Cruz; 1980 to be exact.  While in Santa Cruz, I found that my mind was full of memories from the time that I lived there.  They were mostly childhood memories and now I was looking at grey haired people with the thought that I could identify them, had they been my classmates.  I was looking at grey haired people……OH!……that makes me one of those people!

Where did the time go?  I still feel young, and I still remember being young.  I still love wandering the tidepools.  My body feels older but my mind feels young.  That’s probably true for all those grey haired people I was looking at.  They probably wonder, “How did I get here?”

Another interesting thing that has been happening to me is that every time I shop at Lunardi’s Market in Walnut Creek, they stop and look at me and give me a senior discount.  They don’t even ask if I’m a senior!  What age is a senior anyway?  I turn 60 tomorrow and I don’t think I look my age.  What is happening to me?  I want to be clear about something…..this age thing just creeps up on you and you don’t even see it coming.  Our children look at us and think that we don’t move as quickly as they remember us moving when they were kids.  The thing is, our minds are still moving, just at a different pace then our bodies are.  We know that they will find out our secrets soon enough, and then our time spent with them now, will seem to make more sense.

Nearing Sunset

Nearing Sunset

Have you ever noticed how the sky changes color before the sun begins to set?  On certain days, it seems to lose its color before the glorious colors of the sunset show themselves.

So, even though some of us may look like we are losing our color, it is possibly our most colorful time of life.  We are not  unlike this pier that has accumulated much as it holds the wharf up.  If you look at it closely, you will find a beautiful sight.  Long story short, it is not too late to follow your dreams…..even if your hair is turning grey.

“Patchy Morning Fog”

Return to the View from Albion River Inn

Somehow, my mind told me that the view from the cliffs at Albion River Inn would look the same as they did in my photo taken twenty-five years ago.  The peacefulness remains but the flower garden has grown into something quite wonderful.

I had come here in search of simplicity.  I found so much more.  Albion has a certain calmness to it.  The fog horn hums it’s rhythmic tune while the fog gently rolls in and out all day long.  The last day we were there, I awoke in the morning and looked out at the sky.  “Patchy morning fog,” echoed in my mind.  That was the term so often used at KSCO radio in Santa Cruz.  I hadn’t thought of that saying in years, and there it suddenly was again, deja vu.

Along with the morning fog came the hummingbirds and I took this shot from inside the dining room during breakfast.  I liked the light but when I got home I found a surprise on the right hand side.  The hummingbirds had been out battling each other that morning, but I had missed the fact that I had somehow captured one.

We stopped and watched a rehearsal for the Mendocino Music Festival.  It was fascinating and I could tell that the performance was going to be an exceptional experience that evening with Alan Pollack playing his saxophone to Bridge Over Troubled Water and the lovely voice of Kim Nalley singing songs of Aretha Franklin.  We had other plans…..

Sunset at MacCullum House

Dinner at the MacCullum House.  It was divine.  It is interesting to me, how very complicated people can make their lives.  I thought this weekend that it surely is easier to have fun then to be in a snit all the time.  We all do know people though, that find little fun in their lives and almost everything to complain about.  I choose fun over unhappiness.  I will share just a couple more photos from last weekend with you and then be on my way.

Seeking Simplicity and Finding Simplicity…..it’s all around us, like the view from the lighthouse, any lighthouse really, and the beauty, complexity, and simplicity of flowers.

So there you have it.  I went to Mendocino, didn’t make it to Fern Canyon.  It was too far to travel, and by not going to Fern Canyon, it was easier to find the simplicity all around me.  The weekend was, simply, lovely!

Deja Vu

Chico Graduation 2014

Chico Graduation 2014

There are times in your life when you may be walking, and catch a certain scent and it sends you hurling back to another time and place.  There are times when you may hear a certain phrase, and it makes you feel years younger.  There are times when a song comes on the radio, and you think of a place or a time that you haven’t thought of in years.  It’s like you’re standing in that exact place and time again, right then, yet right now.  There are times when you see something and bang!  Deja Vu  This was one of those times.  We were at a graduation party in Chico (or a congraduation party, as the sign read) and this photo was snapped, and when it was shown to me, the following album cover by Crosby Stills & Nash popped into my mind and the tunes started running through my head.  What an amazing feeling to look at that photo and see something else.  Truly Deja Vu or Duva Je as my husband often calls it.  A mixing up of the words, but we both know it would mean the same thing.

De Ja Vu

My Little Deja Vu

I love those moments that whisk me back to another time.  Those remembrances remind me of how very colorful and meaningful life can be.

And yes, we had a dog instead of a guitar, some of us barely knew each other, and it wasn’t our place; we were just trying to stay cool on a hot day.  The song Deja Vu was on the next album by Crosby Stills and Nash.  Both the albums are wonderful and even if you are young, and think you wouldn’t be interested in them; you should give them a listen.  What a song writing talent, those three had.  Check out Deja Vu on Wikipedia if you’ve never heard of the phenomena before.  Those of us who are a bit older; we live our lives by it.  It happens to me often and I try to stay in the memory or the moment as long as possible.  Do you have a Deja Vu moment that continues to stick with you?
