Trestle Trekking

Standard

While we were in Canada we decided to go for a bike ride on the Kettle Valley Railway Trestles. The view from there was magnificent and the story behind the bike/walking trail is a testimony to the goodwill that lives in so many of us.

There are eighteen trestles and two tunnels. In 2002 there was a lightning strike that started a huge wildfire. It damaged or destroyed sixteen of the eighteen trestles and you can see how large the fire was nearly every place that you go in and around Kelowna. I didn’t notice where the fire had been until I road across the trestles and became aware of the burnt tree stumps that still remain standing today. The Canadian people have lovingly rebuilt this lovely trail and these trestles. We were lucky enough to come upon it just before they stopped renting bikes for the season. It is a place where you want to linger and take in all the beauty that the hills and valleys have to offer. The fact that Fall was setting in only enhanced the beauty of the countryside. Should you ever venture to Kelowna British Columbia, please don’t miss the opportunity to ride along this mesmerizing trestle trail.

Lovely Lake Okanagan

Standard

Last week we took a trip to Lake Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada. We just happened to be there while the trees were turning golden. It was quiet and slow-paced, as the summer tourists had returned home. It was the perfect Fall vacation.

We were staying in Kelowna, near the Lakeshore Wine Route. We didn’t have a meal that wasn’t spectacular, the locals were friendly, and the weather was wonderful. This is a place I want to return to someday, perhaps at another time of the year so we can experience it during a different  season. We traveled there with friends, took in wineries, (accidentally) saw Will & Kate’s motorcade and Kate’s waving hand, sipped and painted on the deck, and played cards. We came back fully refreshed. I realized that you don’t have to go very far to find a place that rejuvenates you with its stunning silence and beauty. You just have to look and listen.

Stepping Outside

Standard

I’ve been noticing lately that there is a stillness about this season that I haven’t noticed before.  It’s very hard to capture that feeling in a photo.

Fall Stillness

Fall Stillness

There’s been no swirling winds that knock the leaves off the branches.  It’s just been incredibly still.  I’m a little worried that we won’t get rain again this winter.

Turning Leaves in Bidwell Park

Turning Leaves in Bidwell Park

I went to Bidwell Park in Chico, California when I was visiting the other day, with the hope that the leaves would be colorful and falling from the trees.  The leaves were just starting to turn and there were so many acorns that it seemed as if they were raining from the sky.  The chatter in the trees was amazing to listen to as the acorns fell from above.

Illusive Butterfly

Illusive Butterfly

Little did I realize that all I needed to do was step outside into my own backyard to find a sight that I don’t usually see.  We often have Swallowtail butterflies in the yard but seldom do you see a Monarch.

Resting in the Magnolia

So when I saw this, I grabbed my camera and waited……and chased……..and waited……and chased……and waited.  This was a very shy butterfly.

My patience paid off and I can return to the calm that continues to surround this season.

Shadows and Light

We ran out to the Suisun Valley last evening to capture a few images of the grapes while they were still on the vine.

A Good Harvest

A Good Harvest

These grapes were due to be picked very early this morning.    I don’t need to tell you that these grapes will make some luscious red wine.

Autumn is Nearing

Autumn is Nearing

What I do need to tell you is that the Suisun Valley is an up and coming place to go taste wine.  It was just written up in The North Bay Business Journal and there are some, long established, Napa wineries that are moving into this valley.

Calm Before the Harvest

Calm Before the Harvest

It’s not very far to go for many of us.  It doesn’t have the crowds, the expensive tasting fees, or trouble with parking.

Beautiful Bunches

Beautiful Bunches

It does have friendly people, good wine, and lovely picnic areas.  You’d better go try it before the word gets out.  I am lucky; it’s virtually in my backyard.

Quiet Little Valley

Quiet Little Valley

In a few weeks this valley will be ablaze of yellows, reds, and oranges.  The harvest is in and Autumn is here.  Drink in all those colors that life has to offer.
