Reflective Sky

Standard

Yesterday I was on my way to an appointment in San Rafael when I came upon this area.  The air was perfectly still and the waters were reflecting the blue sky like a mirror.  I was so taken with the sight that I decided to stop on my way back later in the day.

I came back through a couple of hours later and it was windy and the waters were muddied up.  It was so different then what I had viewed earlier, so I decided to return today with the hope that I could catch the same stillness in the air.

The wind was ever so slight this morning, but it doesn’t take much to stir the water.  The view was nothing like the day before.

I was a little disappointed but then I saw a single crane and it was gracious enough to fly across the water for me.  What a lovely sight.

It made me stop to reminisce about how I felt as a child when I would see something amazing for the very first time.  Our lives are filled with wonderment every day.  We just need to stop to take it all in.  We all live in places that have beautiful surroundings.  I hope you see something truly amazing this weekend.

Counting Clouds

Standard

We certainly have had some amazing cloud cover recently.  Last weekend we went to the Suisun Valley to listen to a friend play with his band.  The day was so nice and the clouds were promising rain.

The colors in the valley were amazing and I was sure that the dark clouds were coming our way.

We could see the lightning and hear the thunder, our rainfall was about six and a half drops.  They were tiny drops too.  I know it’s coming someday.  I just wished it was that day.

I shouldn’t forget that, once it rains, I won’t be seeing such beauty about me.  It will be grey, wet, and cold and I will be hoping for views like this again with the promise of rain off in the distance.

Sun Setting Behind the Ridge

The gathering of clouds

I could not ignore

As I stood in the sun

On this valley floor

Soon the hills rumbled

With thunderous cries

As lightning threw sparks

And lit up the skies

I stood still in sunshine

Wishing the rain

Would fall in this place

But my wish was in-vain

Why aren’t we just happy with what we get?

Stepping Outside

Standard

I’ve been noticing lately that there is a stillness about this season that I haven’t noticed before.  It’s very hard to capture that feeling in a photo.

Fall Stillness

Fall Stillness

There’s been no swirling winds that knock the leaves off the branches.  It’s just been incredibly still.  I’m a little worried that we won’t get rain again this winter.

Turning Leaves in Bidwell Park

Turning Leaves in Bidwell Park

I went to Bidwell Park in Chico, California when I was visiting the other day, with the hope that the leaves would be colorful and falling from the trees.  The leaves were just starting to turn and there were so many acorns that it seemed as if they were raining from the sky.  The chatter in the trees was amazing to listen to as the acorns fell from above.

Illusive Butterfly

Illusive Butterfly

Little did I realize that all I needed to do was step outside into my own backyard to find a sight that I don’t usually see.  We often have Swallowtail butterflies in the yard but seldom do you see a Monarch.

So when I saw this, I grabbed my camera and waited……and chased……..and waited……and chased……and waited.  This was a very shy butterfly.

My patience paid off and I can return to the calm that continues to surround this season.

A Weekend Away

Standard

We took off last weekend with high hopes that we would be on Avila Beach at sunset.  Unfortunately, the traffic was not accommodating in helping to make that happen.

The hills stood between us and Avila Beach.  For those of you who don’t know, Avila Beach sits just below San Luis Obispo.  It reminds me, a bit, of Santa Cruz when I was very young.

The next morning we walked from pier one to pier three and the colors in the water were amazing.  I found that I was longing for Kodachrome.  I just can’t do it justice digitally.

One thing I like about this place is how extraordinarily ordinary it is.  This boat is a perfect example, it’s not a yacht.  Some places are filled with expensive boats.  I didn’t see that here.

Lonely Boat

It’s a calm place where people seem happy just to be out in the morning enjoying a cup of coffee with friends.

It is clear me that I need to spend more time in this place.  I really like it here.  I like the activity and I like it’s peacefulness.

We carried on down to Newport Beach.  It’s got an ocean full  of water but it doesn’t have the feel of Avila Beach.  I found myself missing the place from hence I’d come.

Go out and have a lovely weekend away.
