Catching A Final Glimpse

Standard

Last weekend we went on a hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  We left from a place named Gray Eagle Lodge.  The pathway was often shady and you could hear running water most of the time, which somehow makes it seems a little cooler.

There were some flowers left and some that were fading away.  The insects didn’t seem to mind that the flowers were going away.  I wonder what is of interest when all the pollen seems to have been removed from the flower…..

This poor plant was almost completely gone.  Good eating for the bugs, I suppose.  I liked the shadows that were cast from what remained of the leaves.

There is a very small daisy that grows in the mountains and I have been trying to capture it, as my eye sees it, for ages now.  I know this isn’t in perfect focus.  Nothing about it is in focus, but I like the softness and true color of it.

The hike was lovely and the surprise waterfalls were energetically running with cool mountain water.  It’s this crazy little daisy that I cherish most.  I might never take another picture of one.  It’s simplicity is what draws me to it.  I appreciate the simple things in life, whether it be a hike, a sunset, or a photo.  The simple things are by far the most precious.

A Magical Moment

Standard

I recently went to Disneyland to celebrate my grandson’s birthday, Disneyland’s, and my own as well.  Disneyland and I share a birthday….that’s hard to imagine, I know.

I was so touched to see Walt Disney’s face on the walls of, It’s A Small World, as it brought back childhood memories of watching, The Wonderful World of Disney.  Walt would say something to the viewing public each and every week.  We looked forward to hearing from him.

The fireworks were truly a show that shouldn’t be missed, if you’re one of those people who loves fireworks.  They definitely outdid themselves with this show.

California Adventure had a parade and show that was just as engaging as Disneyland’s was.  It was even rather nice to get a little wet from the show after a long hot day.

But my favorite time was when the crowd went a bit silent as they eagerly awaited the festivities.  The Tea Cups looked so inviting to me, sitting quietly under the brightly colored lanterns.  That was the most magical moment for me.

What’s Happening?

Standard

I’ve had several interesting things happen to me lately.  The first was traveling with my family to Santa Cruz, California.  I found, when I was there, that I was looking at people in various places who had greying hair and wondering if I went to school with them.

I might only be able to recognize someone if I have seen them on Facebook.  It has been a very long time since I lived in Santa Cruz; 1980 to be exact.  While in Santa Cruz, I found that my mind was full of memories from the time that I lived there.  They were mostly childhood memories and now I was looking at grey haired people with the thought that I could identify them, had they been my classmates.  I was looking at grey haired people……OH!……that makes me one of those people!

Where did the time go?  I still feel young, and I still remember being young.  I still love wandering the tidepools.  My body feels older but my mind feels young.  That’s probably true for all those grey haired people I was looking at.  They probably wonder, “How did I get here?”

Another interesting thing that has been happening to me is that every time I shop at Lunardi’s Market in Walnut Creek, they stop and look at me and give me a senior discount.  They don’t even ask if I’m a senior!  What age is a senior anyway?  I turn 60 tomorrow and I don’t think I look my age.  What is happening to me?  I want to be clear about something…..this age thing just creeps up on you and you don’t even see it coming.  Our children look at us and think that we don’t move as quickly as they remember us moving when they were kids.  The thing is, our minds are still moving, just at a different pace then our bodies are.  We know that they will find out our secrets soon enough, and then our time spent with them now, will seem to make more sense.

Have you ever noticed how the sky changes color before the sun begins to set?  On certain days, it seems to lose its color before the glorious colors of the sunset show themselves.

So, even though some of us may look like we are losing our color, it is possibly our most colorful time of life.  We are not  unlike this pier that has accumulated much as it holds the wharf up.  If you look at it closely, you will find a beautiful sight.  Long story short, it is not too late to follow your dreams…..even if your hair is turning grey.

Leopards and Swallowtails

Standard

Even though it was hot over the July 4th holiday in the Sierra’s, we managed to hike and find some places of beauty.  We came across an area of Leopard Lilies that were attracting Swallowtail Butterflies.

They knew that I was close to them but they were so interested in the flowers that they let me move in on them so I could take a closer shot.  There were two of them for a bit but I think this photo is clearer than the other.

The conditions are pretty dry in the mountains but there have been several thunder storms and the wildflowers are everywhere.  It’s delightful to see them when you are expecting to see only a few because of the drought.

If you read my blog, then you know that I just can’t let a good sunset go to waste.  The last evening there, it was especially nice to view the sunset over The Old Mill Pond.

You really should take a road trip to Graeagle, California some time.  It’s a magical place.
